#42 Go to a Protest Rally
I have an opinion on most political issues but keep to myself because I think it’s pointless to argue. Recently however, we heard that our unimpressive governor proposed cutting funding from our Ohio libraries by 50%. As an educator, reader and citizen I find this unacceptable. Libraries are not frivolity. They are essential.
“A library outranks any other one thing that a community can do to benefit its people.”
A group of us went to a rally to protest the proposed budget cut. Hopefully the cry will be loud enough to hear.

#98 Create a raised garden for the back yard.
IT’S DONE!!!! WE bought 4×4′s from Home Depot. We had top soil delivered and mixed it with compost. Four weeks later, we have an assurance that the tomatoes will not drown this year!
#91 Go to a lecture
Completed 5/21/09
It feels so good to finally cross off a real goal. I have been working on stuff for three weeks but this is the first solid item I can strike from the list.
Matty and I heard a professor give a lecture about how William Henry Harrison became a Brigadier General in charge of the Armies of the NorthWest. Professor Skaggs was reading from a paper and I really had to pay attention to keep up with what he was saying. So, I laughed at all his jokes and nodded when he was making points. Afterwards, Matty called me a brown noser. I suppose I am.
# 57 Read ten books that won the Pulitzer Prize. (1/10)
I finished my first Pulitzer Prize book yesterday. It was The Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri. I adore collections of short stories and this one was really amazing. This was my pick for my book club with friends from work. We’re getting together next month to talk about it and I’m going to try my best to make some Indian food.
Week Three
Word of the week – Archipelagic – adj Of or pertaining to a group of islands
I chose this word for a vocabulary term because it is the archipelagic countries of the Caribbean Sea that are giving me the most trouble in memorizing the capitals of North America. It’s tough to see all the islands on most maps.
Other Success – The 4×4′s are secured in the ground. The only thing left is is to fill the raised garden with dirt. Hopefully pictures next week.
Week Two
Vocabulary Word – STOLID adj. calm, impassive
The teacher was stolid in her dealings with students who asked for extensions on projects due in May.
Success in other areas – I have finished making flash cards for all the countries and their capitals. JuJu and I are working on learning together. So far, I’m getting pretty good at South America. Asia and Africa are going to be more daunting tasks.
I got the book “Odd Ball Ohio” and soon Merah and I will plan some trips around this great state of ours. Of course trips to New England and Chicago are also in the works.
I am currently working on #98, creating a raised garden for the back yard. When I started the project last Saturday, I did not realize that it would be such a daunting task, but we’re making it through.
Week One
Vocabulary Word – ASSIDUOUS adj diligent, hard working. I tried using this in sentences about my students this week, but since it’s May it hardly describes any of them.
Progress on Other Fronts – I feel that many of my activities are going to take some time to cook. I can’t read The New York Times Guide to Essential to Knowledge in one week. I started it though. I know all about modern dance.
I sent a piece of snail mail to a friend but I can’t tell you who since it was a surprise. I also made flash cards for the capitols of Europe. A bit more study time is needed for full mastery. I signed up for spin classes at the gym, in hopes of getting a workout routine going. Merah and I are working on planning a trip somewhere in New England and it should cover a bunch of both our goals. So, no major strides, but there is a start. And isn’t starting the most important thing?
